Voyage of Curiosity

Last year’s Cabinet of Curiosity was such a hit that this year we decided to recreate Marco Polo’s 25,000-mile journey from Venice to China and back. The students spent two incredible weeks making the voyage come to life, and loans of useful materials allowed them to maintain their goal of at least 80% recycled materials.

An adventuresome history trek and entertaining travelogue, the “Voyage of Curiosity” wove student generated characters and performances with interpretations of Marco Polo’s descriptions and experiences. Richly enhanced with student-designed sets, costumes, props and dialogue, the voyage approximated Polo’s path, immersing the voyager in the sights, sounds and excitement of the 13th century Silk Road.

Visitors had a chance to spy on Marco in a Genovese jail, learn about life before Map Quest, visit Xanadu and the wonders of India, survive the Yeti and a pair of cannibals, traverse the Great Wall, and learn about the conquests of another powerful people—the Vikings. Parents & guests traveled among cultures ranging from the expert horsemen of Mongolia to the tattooed cannibals of Sumatra; from the exotic land of India to the mysterious China. They witnessed the great Kublai Khan’s menagerie and a Silk Road marketplace, while helping to raise money for Heifer International, an organization dedicated to bringing livestock and training to third-world villages.
It was an exciting and educational evening for everyone.
