SOCIAL STUDIES AND WORLD HISTORY

At the core of all New School Preparatory Social Studies programs are the ten thematic strands of Social Studies as outlined by the National Council of Social Studies [here].

Grade Six Social Studies
Global Developments in Ancient Times
SOC-0601

This survey course examines global developments from the beginning of human development through ancient times in Oriental and Occidental cultures. Through in-depth case studies, students will gain a better understanding of how past global developments have helped shape the world we live in today.

Grade Seven Social Studies
Geography
GEO-0701
Using geography as a lens, students explore the international workings of the world. Case studies relating to governments and social systems assist students in understanding the importance of location in today's interconnected world. Topics include interpretation and formulation of charts, graphs, and Venn Diagrams; Internet, newspaper, and news publications as research for class reports and debate; and the use of advanced language skills to examine political and philosophical topics via discussion and written assignments.

Grade Eight Social Studies
America and the World
SOC-0801
Students examine the role of the United States in world history through World War II. After gaining a solid understanding of the factors behind World War II, students are guided into Holocaust Studies. An integral part of Holocaust Studies includes realizing "The Power of One" and "Civil Courage".

Grade Six World History (Honors)
HIS-0601H
This course provides Grade Six students a basic understanding of the history of mankind and the development of civilization. HIS-0601H has three components: history, geography, and current events. Topics include the history of mankind from early man through the great civilizations of Africa and Asia and up to the decline of the Roman Empire. Students will learn the basics of geography as well as the specific geographic regions of early man and the onset of civilization. Current events are also emphasized and this study is designed to give students an appreciation of the importance of being informed and connecting past events with current conditions.

Grade Seven World History (Honors)
HIS-0701H
This course provides Grade Seven students a basic understanding of the history of mankind and the development of civilization. HIS-0601H has three components: history, environmental studies, and current events. Topics include the history of the Middle Ages through modern times, with a strong emphasis on the development of Western thought. Environmental studies emphasize local issues and encourage students to be actively involved within the local community. Current event studies foster an appreciation of the importance of being informed and connecting past events with current conditions.

Grade Eight American History (Honors)
HIS-0801H
This course provides a chronological study of United States history from 1845 to the present day in order to foster a basic understanding of the events that shaped our nation. Students concentrate on research and reporting skills as a vehicle to understand the timeline of events in America during this time period. Environmental studies, current events, debating skills, and community service are emphasized as well. Students are required to contribute to a school history magazine.
