NSP Students Shine in 2011 Law Competition

Seventh and Eighth graders competed alongside high school students at the state finals level of the "We the People" Congressional Hearing competition. This is a simulated congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

New School students were the first group of middle school students to ever take part in this high school competition and received a trophy from the Florida Law Related Education Association honoring their level of knowledge and professionalism.

NSP Students Commemorate Wall's Fall

On the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the day of German Unity, October 3, New School Prep German students and Rollins College German students tore down a12-foot tall replica of the Berlin Wall. Students constructed "The Wall" as they learned about the history behind the actual Berlin Wall that separated the eastern and western halves of the city.

New School Prevails Over High School Competition in State German Competition

New School Prep German students have done it again! For the second year in a row, students placed first in state at the German competition. 4th-7th graders competed against high school students in events such as poetry recital, reading comprehension tests, grammar and culture exams, a talent show, and cultural art projects.

NSP Student places 4th in nationwide "Philosophy Slam"

Each year Philosophy Slam holds a nationwide contest in which kids answer a probing philosophical question. The latest question was “Is global warming the greatest challenge facing humankind?” Fourth place for the nation’s most philosophical 7th grader was awarded to NSP student Monica J.

To date NSP has had 8 Philosophy Slam award winners, including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

The mission of the Kids Philosophy Slam is to give kids a voice, and to inspire them to think by unlocking their intellectual and creative potential through a unique yet powerful philosophical forum.

The Kids Philosophy Slam is an annual program designed to make philosophy fun and accessible to all kids in grades K-12, as well as to help promote critical thinking skills and encourage dialogue with other students and adults.

NSP Students Sweep State German Competition

At the annual Florida Association of Students of German (FASG) Conference held on April 17-19, ten elementary and middle school New School Prep students placed first in state. They were up against high school students from across Florida. New School Prep students spent 3 days competing in events such as: vocabulary, grammar, culture, German poetry, 2-D and 3-D art projects, digital media projects, and a talent show. Overall the ten New School students took 29 medals and trophies. Last year, nine New School Prep students took 2nd place overall in the state.

FASG is a student run organization that promotes the study of German language and culture. Student officers work closely with the registrars of the organization. Sara Höfler, NSP German teacher, was voted the 2007 Teacher of the Year for German in the state of Florida. Individual results here.

Cabinets of Curiosities Night

Cabinets of Curiosities, also known as Wunderkammern, were the precursor of the modern museum and were proliferate throughout Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. New School Prep students created thrilling displays and reenactments of:

• An Egyptian Pharaoh's Tomb
• A Native American Village
• The lives of the early American colonists
• Colonial Africa
• A Mayan Pyramid
• A Roman Villa
• An 18th Century Laboratory

New School Partners With Rollins College

New School Preparatory is proud to announce its partnership with the Rollins College Office of Community Engagement as well as the Department of Modern Languages and Literature. New School and Rollins will collaborate on a social action project which will assist rural Namibian children to gain a quality education.

Toshiba Exploravision Contest Awards Announced

New School Preparatory was one of only three Orlando schools who earned honorable mention in the annual Toshiba Exploravision contest. Sponosored by Toshiba, Exploravision is a competition for students in Grades K-12. The Kids Philosophy Slam has been featured on: The NBC Today Show, The New York Times, National Public Radio, and Time Magazine for Kids.

The mission of the Kids Philosophy Slam is to give kids a voice and to inspire kids to think by unlocking their intellectual and creative potential through a unique and powerful philosophical forum.

New School Students to Study at Duke University

Each year students at New School are administered the SATs. At the end of Grade 6, those students who score 95% or higher on the SATs in core subject areas (Reading, Math, Science) qualify for Duke University's academic talent search, TIP, Talent Identification Program. The students pictured here qualified for TIP and went on to take college SATs. Those whose scores are 1000 or above are invited to study at Duke University for their summer programs. Eight of the students pictured here will be studying at Duke University this summer and taking courses such as Astrophysics, Mathematics, Philosophy, Advanced Writing, Architecture, and Psychology.
